Le Royaume-Uni à l'épreuve de la crise 1970-79

The question of racism and anti-racism is an important part of public debate in the 1970s. The decade saw, for practically the first time, victims of racism organizing themselves to respond. This documentary retraces the history of organizations in Southall, London .

A university lecture this time: Professor Bogdanor on the IMF Crisis.

I have already described the approach of this very well informed commentator as "solidly establishment, but fair-minded."

The video is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es7tbo8L3us&t=87s

Here is a tool which will allow you to convert the video to Mp3 so you can listen to it while decorating the Christmas tree or wrapping présents.

Agrégation thème

Someone said they were a bit lost. Wednesday morning we will be looking at the passage about a river. On the first  Wednesday in December, we will be looking at the passage written by Boris Vian. On Wednesday 14th December, there is no thème class, because all week you will be doing mock exams.

I will be providing, via this blog, around Christmas time, some new passages for our classes which begin again on the 4th of January

Note however that the civilization class on Tuesday 13th December is not cancelled, and will take place as usual. This means you may have to do a mock exam in the morning and then come to the class which is at 3.30pm.

The winter of discontent

The "winter of discontent" as journalists dubbed the wave of strikes in 1978-79  is an important segment of 1970s social history, and has been much debated since.  Here looking back on this period, in this one hour symposium, are some key figures from the time, in an atmosphere generally sympathetic to trade union aims.

"Crisis: what crisis?"

Si vous pouvez le rendre pour le 1er décembre, c'est l'idéal, mais je commenterai également les travaux rendus plus tard.

Relisez avant de commencer le texte de cadrage du programme.

PS Just a couple of pointers
1) It would be a mistake to write about only one part of the decade.
2) A good answer would include references to events, to perceptions, and also to later analyses.
3) Give brief but specific examples. Do not write "See for example Punk rock", write "the very high sales of 'God Save the Queen' by the Sex Pistols' may serve as an illustration"

Le Royaume-Uni à l'épreuve de la crise 1970-79

Women's Liberation

It is impossible to point to a “typical” 1970s activist for women’s liberation, such was the richness and variety of the activity involved. Some worked in trade unions organizing women workers (See Grunwick above), others organized inside the Labour party for policy change; some concentrated on “consciousness raising groups”, underlining that “the personal is political”, others were in revolutionary anticapitalist organizations like the International Socialists; some concentrated on publishing books or newspapers, others on “Reclaim the Night” marches or pressuring for funding for rape crisis centres; some raised the slogan “wages for housework” others tried to reduce the influence of body image on women’s perceptions of themselves, and  to encourage clothing and shoes which respected women more than the high heels and skirts which were often being imposed.[1]

[1] If one remembers that this BBC documentary is not about a typical group of 1970s feminists,  but about one kind of feminism among many, it is useful to understand some of the debates which were around. You can find it here

Le Royaume-Uni à l'épreuve de la crise 1970-79

To make the most of the Bank Holiday, here is an extra video this week.

"Bloody Sunday" in January 1972 was one of the events which most determined the future of Northern Ireland over the following decades, and led forty years later to a spectacular apology by the British Prime Minister ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e3VxZwjQ7g )

This short video looks at the history of that day and the campaign which followed it:

Préparation agrégation anglais civilisation britannique 38

Today' s video is on, perhaps, a lighter theme. In recent decades, historians have wanted to explore aspects of the past which had often been neglected, and "history of everyday life" has become a rising subject.

Television has tried to look at this too, and this programme takes a twenty first century family and makes them live for a week in the 1970s, with the help of historians of technology.

You will find the video here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk2uXN9yaS4

Documents for the agrégation exams

Before I forget, I wanted to remind you of something. Any document used in the written exam for "text commentary" will necessarily be from the 1970s. Later documents (memoirs, autobiographies, journalistic comparisons etc) will not be used. However, for the oral exam (leçon etc), documents published later may be used. These are the rules which have been decided by the jury .

Contrôle final Master 1 LEA: informations

The last class of the semester, on the 29th of November, will be a classroom test.

This will involve two parts. Firstly there will be a short translation into English (similar to the ones we are doing in class). Secondly there will be a short essay to write about one of the subjects we have been looking at in class (So, up to now, Ireland and UK multiculturalism). You need to show you have a good level of English and a good knowledge of the subjects we have covered.

The test will be in room A401.

Le Royaume-Uni à l'épreuve de la crise 1970-79

The 1970s (in a less dramatic way than the 1930s, but nevertheless important) are known as years when antiracist and antifascist activity was very dynamic. These are the years of Rock against Racism and the Anti-Nazi League. The return of mass unemployment gave the far right opportunities they had struggled to find in previous decades, but the fightback against the far right was powerful, and they lost a lot of ground and entered into a decline which lasted a number of years.

Commentators agree that both antifascist activity and the change in Conservative party rhetoric about immigration led to the decline of such organizations as the National Front, though they do not agree on which factor was the most important.

Today's video is only short : 16 minutes. It was made by the ITV channel Thames Television in 1978, at the time of the biggest of the Anti Nazi League carnivals.

You will find it here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvmUVE05XRQ

You can always, of course, convert it into an MP3 file and listen to it while practising on your 1970s space hopper.

Seminar on multiculturalism: text commentaries

As you know, this course is evaluated by final exam.

Nevertheless you need practice in text commentaries on historical or contemporary documents, and particularly in being sure not to do a literary text commentary on a historical document.

So in the last three sessions of the seminar, individual students will be presenting short text commentaries of maximum fifteen minutes. On Wednesday I will be noting who is doing which.

Here are the dates of the documents which will be analayzed by the students.

Everyone will study each document at home before the class, so that they are ready to ask questions and make comments about each document.

Wed 23 novembre:
  1. The Wind of Change
  2. Rivers of Blood
  3. Macpherson report summary

Wed 30 novembre:
  1. Chicken Tikka Masala
  2. Bigotgate
  3. A Golden thread

Wed 7 décembre
  1. “State multiculturalism has failed” says PM
  2. Doreen Lawrence’s gain is Britain’s loss
  3. Speech by Jeremy Corbyn

Master 1 LEA Translation passage

We will begin Tuesday's class by looking at how you have translated this passage, which you should prepare before the class.

One of the most important figures of the Seventies was of course Harold Wilson. Smoking a pipe and wearing a cheap raincoat was part of his image; the Open University was his proudest achievement. He guided the Labour party through these turbulent years. For supporters, he was a realist who kept different political forces in balance for the good of his ideals. For critics on the Left, he abandoned ideals and gave in to the pressure of the international banks and to racist voters at home; for critics on the Right he refused to accept that times had changed and neoliberalism was the best way forward.

He wrote what are probably some of the most impressively honest memoirs written by and ex-prime minister, in his two books: "The Labour Government 1964-70" and "Final Term".

When he died in 1994, there were of course many obituaries. Some were subtly hostile like this one

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/22-obituary-lord-wilson-of-rievaulx-1620977.html

More positive was this documentary, broadcast on the evening of his death (though of course prepared earlier). Naturally, when people die, the media generally try to emphasize the positive side of their life's achievements, but if you read between the lines, you will get much information about the key issues of the 1970s.

Here is the video:
