L2 thème exercise . Second year translation exercise

For those students who took this exercise with me a few days ago, or for any other visitor who wants to practice their translation skills. Below is the passage to translate, and if you click on the link at the bottom, you will find my suggested translation along with quite a number of explanatory notes about grammar points.

Passage to translate :

As you know, tomorrow is the test .
Next Thursday, the 13th, we will be translating this document:

Marcel Pagnol, Le Château de ma mère (1976)

Une petite pierre tinta sur la ferrure du volet. C'était le signal convenu. J'étais déjà tout habillé; j'ouvris lentement la fenêtre. Un chuchotement monta dans la nuit;
J'avais froid.

Here it is on Amazon.

Songs from Irish history

The fields of Athenrye

This song tells the story of a young man sent to prison for many years for stealing food during the Irish famine.

In this song, a parent speaks to their son who is leaving for America, and who he may never see again.

Another, very moving story of a father in Ireland whose son leaves for America. They exchange letters for many years but never see each other again. The son makes a good life and even some money, bit never comes back to visit. (with lyrics)

M1 MEEF and others: the BBC history of the partition of India

This documentary tells the rather depressing story of the partition of India into India and Pakistan, carried out hurriedly as the British left their colony.

Explanations for this terrible event vary widely. Some blame age old divisions and traditions; others blame the poverty and lack of democracy which British rule had done nothing to solve, or even the encouragement Britain gave to religious and ethnic division.
